How To React At The First Signs Of Heartburn
Signs of heartburn can be extremely worrying, for both the sufferer and their immediate family. This is normally a problem which is fully treatable, even though it can take a long time for the condition to be fully eradicated. There are times, however, when the heartburn is a symptom of something more serious, so it is essential to have the condition looked at by a qualified physician before you start to administer any treatment. You can, of course, use over the counter medicines to control pain in the short term while you are waiting for the results of the diagnosis. When you know what is wrong, you can take steps to correct it.
The first time you notice heartburn occurring, you will probably be tempted to reach for an antacid drug to keep the pain at bay. This is a perfectly understandable reaction, and indeed the antacid will give you the quickest relief you can get from this condition. It is essential, though, to not just leave it there. If the problem returns, it will show you that you have a problem which needs to be dealt with. What that problem may be can be revealed by the other symptoms you feel at the same time.
If you have any symptoms which are not normally associated with heartburn, you may have a condition which will need far more in the way of treatment. Get to see a physician as quickly as you can, because heartburn can even be one of many symptoms of heart disease. Even in this case, you will have a far better chance of survival if the diagnosis is made early. Don't let fear rob you of what you need to know. In most cases, there will be no heart disease, but the heartburn will simply be a symptom of the gastro-esophageal reflux which is its most common cause.
There is no reason why the first signs of heartburn should not be countered with antacid drugs. They will relieve your pain more quickly than any of the natural equivalents. The key is to make sure you understand that antacids are only a short term fix, and that you will need to plan for a longer term course of treatments to clear up the condition completely. There is much that you can do for yourself, through natural healing, lifestyle changes and an improved diet. This is the best place for you to start.
In some cases, the most seemingly insignificant change to your lifestyle can reap big rewards. The most significant change you can make to your life is to eat food in smaller units, but to eat it more often. It is when the stomach is bloated that the muscle is most likely to malfunction and allow acid to regurgitate back into the upper body. Just this one lifestyle change can often be enough to allow heartburn to subside. If you can improve the quality of the food you eat, you will notice an even greater benefit.
The greatest benefit you can gain will come from an extended program of improvement in every area of your life. If you can cut out, or at least drastically reduce, your consumption of trigger factors which can aggravate heartburn, you will benefit greatly. Most of these trigger factors are obvious and well enough known. They include smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol, overeating, and eating food which is loaded with saturated fat. As well as this, make sure that the food you do take in is food which needs alkalies to digest, rather than acids. If your diet is based around a good intake of fresh food, including fruit and vegetables, you will quickly reduce heartburn.
The only exception to this is where there is a physical problem with your body which needs to be healed. Heartburn can be caused by a chemical imbalance in the stomach, leading to the over-production of acid. If this is happening in your case, you can treat it with a program of prescription drug known as proton-pump inhibitors. These drugs are extremely powerful, so the smaller the dose you need the better. This can usually be achieved by avoiding the trigger factors which were mentioned above. The side effects need to be reduced to an absolute minimum.
There are also times when the signs of heartburn tell you that there is a muscular problem within your stomach. This can occur when you have an accident which damages the lower esophageal sphincter muscle, or as a result of the muscle being stretched. This stretching can, and often does, happen, when a person becomes grossly overweight. It can also happen as a result of pregnancy. The only way to deal with this condition effectively is to have surgery to rebuild the muscle and tighten the gap at the top of the stomach. This may be necessary if a stomach pull has preceded the first signs of heartburn.
