How To Give Heartburn Treatment The Greatest Chance Of Working
Heartburn treatment is vitally important if you are to overcome this painful condition and return your life to health and normality. There are treatments which are for the short term, designed only to reduce the level of pain which is being felt by the sufferer, and there are also treatments which are long term, and aimed at eradicating the disease altogether. Both long and short term remedies can be either natural or synthetic, and there is no reason why you cannot combine both in one concerted attempt to rid yourself of heartburn for good. There are thousands of people who used to have regular heartburn who now do not suffer with it at all, so there is plenty of hope and inspiration.
Before you begin the treatment of heartburn, you will need to be absolutely sure what you are dealing with. It would be an extreme mistake to think that you were just dealing with a stomach condition, when in reality the heartburn was being caused by something far more serious. It has even been known for heartburn to be one of the symptoms of cancer, so if there is any doubt as to the diagnosis, get to see a physician as quickly as you can. Modern diagnostic equipment will be able to give you a definitive answer on the cause of your heartburn.
Fortunately, most cases of heartburn are far less serious, and are caused by a condition known as gastro-esophageal reflux. This occurs when the muscle at the top of the stomach, known as the lower esophageal sphincter muscle, does not close properly to keep the acid which the stomach uses for digestion in the stomach area. When the acid escapes, it invariably causes a burning sensation in the upper body. This is the symptom which is always present. Other possible symptoms include regurgitating acid in the mouth, and a difficulty swallowing.
The most effective short term heartburn treatment is well enough known. There are antacid drugs which can be taken whenever the pain becomes extreme, and they will deal with it very quickly. The acid which is regurgitating through the system is neutralized and rendered harmless, and you can even feel the effect at the top of the stomach. It is possible, of course, to treat the symptom naturally, but if you do there will be a delayed reaction. If you drink fruit juice, for example, the stomach needs to manufacture its own alkali to neutralize the acid.
Longer term treatment of heartburn is less well known, but there are many different approaches. Some heartburn is caused by short term factors such as a lot of spicy food or too much alcohol. The treatment in these cases should be obvious enough, and if a normal diet and living habits are followed, it should not be long before the body recovers. If the heartburn is of longer standing, it will still make sense to overhaul the diet and make sure that there are no obvious trigger factors which are making the condition worse.
The most sensible first step is to avoid eating excessively large meals. If you are typically eating three large meals a day, cut the size down and eat more often. This is the most important lifestyle change you can make when you are trying to overcome heartburn, because you will be greatly reducing the pressure on the stomach muscles. Changing the food which is eaten at these meals will be another significant factor, especially if you can eliminate saturated fat. Make sure that fresh fruit and vegetables make up a large percentage of your food intake.
This simple, natural, heartburn treatment will be enough in most cases to allow the body to return to health. Where it does not help, there may be a chemical imbalance in the body which is causing too much acid to be generated. This can be managed by the use of drugs which inhibit the creation of this acid, such as proton-pump inhibitors and H2-receptor antagonists. The proton-pump inhibitors are strong drugs with severe side effects, but they do work. H2-receptor antagonists create far fewer side effects, and can be used as an addition, or used on their own outright.
If natural heartburn treatment and the use of drugs have all failed to combat the condition, the most likely explanation is that the stomach muscles are actually physically damaged in some way. This can happen if someone is in an accident, or it can happen over time as a result of the stretching of the muscle. Being grossly overweight, or even being pregnant, can be a cause of this. If the muscle is damaged, there is really no alternative but to undergo surgery to repair the damage. Fortunately, most cases of heartburn can be treated with treatments which are far less invasive, and many will respond well to natural heartburn treatment.
