How Heartburn Relief Can Be Temporarily Or Permanently Achieved

Heartburn relief is something which is being sought by countless people worldwide, as problems with the digestive system become increasingly common. Sometimes, these difficulties are caused by short term phenomena such as a temporary spell of overeating, excessive drinking, or even a pregnancy. Other cases are caused by underlying conditions which need to be eradicated, either with drug treatments or with invasive surgery. Where this occurs, it will be more difficult to control the symptoms in the meantime as antacid drugs can interfere with those given for long term treatment of the condition. The good news is that virtually every case of heartburn is fully treatable.

There are many different physical conditions which can cause heartburn, even though by far the most common is gastro-esophageal reflux. The link here is so strong that in many cases the underlying disease is itself referred to as heartburn. This condition is characterized by the failure of the muscle protecting the top of the stomach to prevent acid from escaping into the system, and regurgitating to the mouth. It is important not to just assume that this is the condition you have, simply because you are feeling heartburn. There can be other causes, including some as serious as cancer, so you will need to see a physician if you are unsure.

If you have gastro-esophageal reflux, you will only have a limited number of symptoms, although these can be severe in nature. You will obviously be suffering from heartburn, and this may in some cases be the only symptom you have. It is more likely, though, especially as the condition progresses, that you will encounter a sour taste in the mouth, as the acid is forced ever higher. This can, in turn, lead to a difficulty in swallowing. These are the only symptoms of the typical gastro-esophageal reflux disease,v so if you have other symptoms you need to see a physician straight away.

Sometimes it can be obvious what has caused this condition to develop, as you will have been having too many late nights with parties, or you will have been overeating. If you suspect that this is the case, it is now time to give the body some time to recover. The immediate treatment of heartburn can be entirely natural if you want it to be, although for immediate pain relief an antacid will work more effectively than anything else. To treat the condition naturally, start by eliminating anything which could trigger the acid reflux. Make sure you don't eat any heavy meals, or an excess of saturated fat.

Temporary relief of the extremely painful symptoms of heartburn can be achieved in different ways. Sometimes, drinking pure, cool water can be enough, as it dilutes the acid and provides relief. If you drink the juice of citrus fruits, it can stimulate the stomach into producing alkalies which will neutralize the acid. The quickest form of heartburn relief, though, comes from taking an antacid drug which you can buy over the counter at a pharmacy. It is unwise to rely on these for too long, but they can provide very fast short term relief.

The biggest problem with antacids is that they can inhibit the action of other drugs which are prescribed for the treatment of gastro-esophageal reflux, such as proton-pump inhibitors and H2-receptor antagonists. Once a treatment of these drugs has started, you will need to refrain from using antacids to control the pain. This is why it is important to make lifestyle changes even if you are committed to a course of drug treatments. If you can reduce the pain naturally, you will be giving the drugs the greatest chance to perform their work in eradicating the disease.

While these drug treatments can provide permanent heartburn relief in a large percentage of patients, they are by no means certain to work. If there is actual physical damage to the stomach muscles, it will be impossible for any drug treatment to work. Drugs and natural therapies can still be used to reduce the symptoms of the disease, but a long term solution will need surgery on the affected muscles. This surgery is obviously going to be invasive, as it deals with the stomach, and it will need a careful recovery.

While this surgery should give complete long term heartburn relief, it will create some short term difficulties. Unlike a limb, the stomach cannot be completely rested after surgery, as the body still needs to take in food. This means that there will inevitably be a degree of pain and soreness in the short term. If you can eat food in regular, small meals rather than in larger ones, you will reduce this as far as possible. You can even think about living on liquid food until the tenderness of the skin recedes to allow you to go back on to solids. The temporary pain is worth enduring for long term heartburn relief.
