How Chronic Heartburn Can Be Overcome And Kept At Bay
Chronic heartburn is on the increase, and it represents a potentially serious loss to industry and business throughout the developed world. Although mild attacks are manageable, a severe attack of heartburn means that the sufferer will not be able to complete their work, whether it is work they do alone or work they do in a group. When heartburn reaches a level where it is severe and frequent, it is obvious that something must be done not only to relieve the short term pain, but also to identify the root cause of the problem and treat it. There are several possibilities as to the cause of heartburn, so some diagnostic work is going to be needed.
It is common for people to use the word heartburn in the context of it being a disease in its own right. This is technically inaccurate, as heartburn is simply a symptom of whatever disease is causing it to happen. In some extreme cases, heartburn can be one of the symptoms of a serious condition such as heart disease or even cancer, so you cannot assume that it is simply a fault of the digestive system. There is far more cause for concern when there are other, less usual, symptoms accompanying the heartburn. If you are in any doubt as to the cause, see a physician.
The most common cause of constant heartburn is a condition known as gastro-esophageal reflux disease, and while this may cause severe pain it is not fatal nor especially dangerous. Both the symptoms and the disease itself can be readily treated with both natural and synthetic treatments. The majority of people who have this disease are able to over come it, provided they are able to make some simple lifestyle changes and stick to them. If you can work out a coherent plan for dealing with the disease, there is no reason why you cannot do the same.
The most pressing need for those suffering from frequent heartburn is to find a way of managing the pain and living with the condition. This can be achieved most easily using antacid drugs, as these will get straight to the acid and neutralize it. The same effect can be achieved with natural substances which stimulate the stomach into producing an alkali, but the time this takes will be longer than that needed by the antacid. It is vital, though, not to see antacids as a long term way of managing the pain. They are merely a short term expedient to allow you to cope while you find a longer term solution.
If heartburn is occurring regularly, that is a clear sign that there is something fundamentally wrong, and that action needs to be taken. You may be aware of actions you have been taking which could make this condition even worse, such as smoking, excessive drinking or overeating. Any of these will stimulate the stomach into producing more acid, and if there is then an acid reflux the pain will be far worse. Start your campaign to defeat heartburn by making some important changes to your lifestyle. Cut out as many trigger factors as you feel able to do.
It is more than worthwhile to give a natural lifestyle a chance for several reasons. It should have a knock on effect in other areas of your life, and make you feel generally fitter and more able to manage your life. It will reduce the amount of antacid you need to put into your body to manage the pain, as there will be less acid produced by the stomach in the first place. This is vital, as if you are going to use drugs for the long term treatment of the condition, you will no longer be able to use antacids as the two are not complimentary.
The use of drugs for the long term treatment of chronic heartburn works by reducing the amount of acid the stomach produces. This can have a negative side effect if you are still eating a lot of food which needs acid for digestion, as some of the food may remain undigested in the stomach. The most common drugs to use for this are called proton-pump inhibitors, and they are powerful enough to manage the condition for long periods of time.
Using these drugs to fight chronic heartburn can have severe side effects, so many physicians will prescribe H2-receptor antagonists instead. These can be prescribed in addition to the proton-pump inhibitors for a short time, or individually for much longer. If the heartburn is caused by a permanent damage to the muscles, the only permanent solution will be to have surgery to correct this condition. This is only needed in a small percentage of cases, but when it is needed the relief can be quick and long lasting. Whatever the cause, there will always be a solution to your long term chronic heartburn.
