Why Acid Heartburn Can Usually Be Controlled And Treated
Acid heartburn is a condition which is affecting thousands of people worldwide, causing them pain and making it difficult for them to get through the working day. The good news is that the vast majority of heartburn cases are easily treatable, with either natural or synthetic drug remedies. It will not usually take long to identify the cause of the trouble, and to put a plan in place which will quickly allow you to return to health. Cases which are caused by lifestyle factors which you find hard to change, such as being overweight, will be harder to deal with, as will cases which are caused by being pregnant.
In reality, acid heartburn is not even a condition in the first place. It is merely a symptom of a condition which can have many different root causes. Where heartburn is caused by a temporary period of overeating or excessive alcohol consumption, you will probably know the cause before you even start. Returning to a healthier way of living will usually be enough for you to return to optimum health. If you notice symptoms other than those of heartburn, there is far more cause for concern. Many more serious conditions, including cancer, can cause this symptom among others. See a physician as soon as you can, if you are in even the slightest doubt.
The most common cause of heartburn is gastro-esophageal reflux. While this may sound like a horrible condition, it is actually relatively mild compared to some of the other conditions which can lead to similar symptoms. The most obvious symptom you will be experiencing is heartburn, and if this is severe enough it can lead to the acid regurgitating into the mouth. This will lead to an unpleasant sour taste, and will be a sign that the condition is relatively severe. It is also possible that you may also have difficulty swallowing, if the case is exceptionally severe.
It is always best to try to treat the condition naturally if you can, before you think about resorting to drugs and surgery. Natural therapies do not leave scars, or have the side effects which are invariably present with drug treatments. You do, however, need to have the discipline to follow a program of correct diet and bodily care. This is important, though, even if you do end up having a course of drug treatment, because the antacid drugs which control the pain in the short term cannot be used in conjunction with the more powerful drugs.
There is no doubt that the quickest way to relieve acid heartburn is by using an antacid drug. This will neutralize the acid very quickly, and prevent it from rising through the upper half of the body. The same result can be achieved naturally, but this will take longer. If you take in a fruit juice which stimulates the body to produce alkaline substances to digest it, this will also neutralize the acid. The difference here is that the body has to be allowed time to produce the alkali, whereas with the drug the relief is nearly instant.
In the short term, effective pain relief will be the most important issue. You don't, however, want to be dependent upon antacids for a long period of time. Doing so can be dangerous, as they can just be masking serious problems within the stomach itself. To eradicate the difficulty completely, you will need to do more than just deal with the symptoms. The first step is to live as healthily as possible, within the limitations that you have. It is unrealistic to expect everyone to completely transform their diet overnight, but the more you can do to improve your lifestyle, the better.
If a changed diet and lifestyle are not enough to allow the condition to fall away, you will need to do something more. At this stage, it is vital to involve a physician who can make a proper diagnosis, and who can also prescribe the drug treatments which will give you the greatest chance of recovering from this condition. The most common drugs used in the treatment of acid heartburn are known as proton-pump inhibitors. These drugs do cause side effects, so the physician will try to keep the dose as low as possible.
These acid heartburn drugs are effective, but they can be needed in doses which are high enough to cause severe side effects. Anyone who is unable to cope with proton-pump inhibitors, or those for whom the side effects are just too severe, there is another possibility known as H2-receptor antagonists. These can be taken in conjunction with the original prescription for a short time, or they can be used alone in certain cases. Any of these drugs can be effective, but it is best if they are used in conjunction with natural methods for healing acid heartburn.
